Boston Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

3:28 first marathon at the Rocket City Marathon in Huntsville, Alabama in 2006.  Since then, running has fallen by the wayside a little bit, still participate in the random 5k to 10k distance, but I've slowed down a good bit since high school--wasn't that fast to begin with unfortunately!

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run another marathon in Fall 2009 Spring 2010, and qualify once more for Boston.  Run Boston in the spring (2011?); participate in my first short-distance triathalon?!!?

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running for the rest of my life!

Personal:

I've just finished my degree in Microbiology.  My favorite things to do always involve the outdoors.  Running is my semi-serious sport, but I relax with climbing.  I guide rafts on the Arkansas river in Colorado during the summers, and I'm hoping to get into medical school in 2010.  Other than that, there's not much to me... I enjoy friends, good fresh vegetables and home-cooked food, my dog Pudding, talking to my family long-distance, and sleeping under the stars.  My most favorite thing in the world is water in its various forms (snow, ice, liquid), whether its a frozen waterfall or the ocean or the river.  A close second is trailrunning when I'm fit... though these days it's more of a struggle to get going than I'd like.

Running through the rainy bike paths of Belfast, near the river Lagan.  It's become one of my favorite places to go in the city.  50 minutes overall, very slow pace.

Climbing on the physical education center wall from 7-9; bad climbing form, got pumped very easily! A little worrying, considering that the Gola trip is coming up soon.  Plan on getting down to the wall later and doing a little bouldering on my own.  I hope that getting my arms pumped and letting them recover for the next two weeks might give me a little more strength for Gola.

River raft guiding again this summer? Sounds like a blast.

You know, they've got some pretty epic ultras out there...

If I could ever find the time to head up there I would, but I think that the powers that be are going to keep me locked up in my office all summer.

As far as training for the run, I'm just keeping my mileage base up, so we'll see what happens. I'm only going to be able to run the last two days, which amounts to between 60 and 70 miles, so it should be alright...

Another crazy fell running night... this time up the flanks of Slieve Donrad, instead of running down that sucker. Was an okay race, but I'm not really pushing  myself at these races, as I'm always a little afraid of falling over and ripping off my ankle/foot/knee and then not being able to run afterwards.  I definitely feel like I need to really push over the summer, do some more moutain races and climb a lot of elevation...

Afternoon run along the river Lagan, heading towards Lisburn... this was my longish run of the week, and I felt a bit tired after the race yesterday which had some uphill to it.  Tomorrow hopefully a shorter recovery run of ~ 3 miles or so... and I need to shop for some healthy food. I've been really wanting some good salad lately, so I plan on getting up and heading to the market downtown for organic produce, some good cheese, and some gourmet coffee!  Then studying at the library until I can't stand it anymore... I'm almost free of bacterial metabolism and physiology!

Your bacteria aren't metabolizing?

You have no physiology?

Sounds rough...

45ish minutes, fairly boring run... a little faster than normal because of taking Saturday to rest.

A big hiking day, which probably consisted of about 6 hours of walking up and down large hills with a backpack... maybe covering roughly 10 miles altogether.  A little running to catch the bus in the morning as well! Certainly tired, but need to stop eating such bad foods:  pizza and chocolate were quite prevalent in my diet today and this past week.  Blah.

Pizza and chocolate are staples of my highly-refined, fine-tuned, bare-bones, scientifically-precise ultrarunning diet...

(that's my story, and I'm sticking to it)

By the way, I saw your mom at the Cotton Row expo and talked to her for a while. I didn't know you were in Ireland ...

After a frenzied few days studying for Microbial Metabolism and Physiology, I gave up books for running to Lisburn, some 10 miles down the towpath out of Belfast.  Took the number 551 bus back, tomato soup for dinner, and now have Virology to attend to for the exam on Monday.  Awkward conversations in the kitchen prompted me to my room with a cup o' black juice and now it's study-time again... I do dislike the lack of activity during finals week... damn.

Well, with finals officially behind me, I think I'll start running more regularly again.  My sleep cycle is wack these days!  I'm going to bed at like 3:00 a.m. every.  I just want to chill out for a little while, but I've got to figure out travel plans and packing and everything just seems so stressful! And I just got done with exams! Hopefully will get in a long run sometime...

Monte Sano... the mountain of health.  I love Monte Sano in all of it's 2000 foot glory.  It's not really a mountain (it's actually what's called a "col" according to wikipedia), but it's an Appalachian foothill and it makes me feel at home.  Brings me back to my days as a college sophomore, making the drive home every Friday afternoon from Mississippi and stopping, usually, at Monte Sano for a quick run before descending the Volvo into Old Big Cove and eating dinner with my parents, who would ask about school and research and mundane things. I remember racing there for the 10k and 5k road races every autumn--the way I appreciated how the air up on Monte Sano was usually a bit drier and cooler than in the Valley.  I remember running there with my cross-country team in high school and doing laps before going off to work in the botanical gardens the summer after my freshman year.  I miss those days a little bit, but there are actual mountains in my destinations as of late and I appreciate those for what they are, and the new events and runs they will bring.

Still, there's something a little bit special about coming home and running on the same trails you've always known.
